How we hire Product Engineers

AI has changed what an exceptional engineer can do. Writing code still matters; however, leverage comes increasingly from choosing the right problem, setting the right scope, curating a great solution, and turning that into a compounding product capability. That is the work we want our interviews to reflect. Therefore, we talk about work you actually owned, design a system together, and spend meaningful time building and reviewing something close to the problems we face at Zauber.

Our goal is to understand where you are outstanding, and whether Zauber is the right place for you to do your best work.

The Product Engineer

Product Engineers build Zauber’s core product and technical foundations. We hold this role to a very high standard: strong engineers ship quickly, but exceptional ones pair speed with taste, judgment, customer affinity, and a relentless drive for quality.

They move incredibly quickly, and they know when speed means taking a shortcut. But shortcuts only count if they deliberately preserve a path to the long-term vision, and if they leave the system easier to evolve, not harder.

Just as important, great Product Engineers know when not to take the shortcut. They can recognize the moments where rigor compounds (choosing the right abstraction, investing in reliability, and obsessing over simplicity). They’re able to navigate complex tradeoffs between immediate customer value and building toward a better future product state, with a high signal-to-noise ratio and a strong sense of systems thinking.

Great Product Engineers connect three layers of thinking and keep them operating in tandem:

The experience we owe you

We care tremendously about building a stellar team, and we are incredibly intentional about every decision we make in getting there. Our process should, hopefully, be a reflection of that.

We are still in our early days and every hire has an outsized amount of impact on what Zauber becomes. If that’s the bar we hold, you should get to feel what it looks like from the inside—the problems we’re actually wrestling with, the way we make decisions, the people you’d be building with. By the end, we want you to have real conviction about whether this is where you want to do your best work, and hopefully an overwhelming amount of excitement about doing it here!

We move quickly so, where calendars allow, the whole process is about a week, rarely more than two. If you need more time between stages, tell us and we’ll work around it.

Some stages end early. If we already have the signal, we move you forward. If the fit isn’t right for what this role needs today, we say so instead of running out the clock. That’s usually a specific mismatch, not your ability. Either way, you hear it from us.

Our process

1. First conversation (15 minutes)

A short call about your application, what you want to work on, and any questions you have about Zauber. The goal is simply to determine whether there is good mutual fit to invest in the rest of the process. Come with an honest view of what you are looking for. We will do the same.

2. Technical deep dive (15-30 minutes)
